‘Maria’s Cafe’, Las Terazzas,Cuba’ by K.J.S.Chatrath

Las Terrazas  is a small community and nature reserve in Pinar del Rio province of Cuba. It is located at about 73 kilometres from Havana in the  Sierra del Rosario mountain range, which was designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1984. The community where Las Terrazas is located, was originally the location of several coffee plantations that were owned and operated by French slave owners who had come from Hispaniola.

The village has a population of about 1000 and a number of hotels and restaurants catering for tourists. The nature reserve includes 5000ha of secondary forest which was planted on the deforested  surrounding hills by building terraces to avoid erosion; hence the name (in Spanish, terrazas means terraces).

The reserve is rich in flora and fauna, and includes lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Organised excursions on the many footpaths and trails can be booked at the local tourist office.

This is a project of sustainable rural economy  being developed, based on the rational use of its natural resources for tourism. The buildings of Las Terrazas Community have been designed to blend with their surroundings.

Maria’s Cafe’s is one of the popular restaurants of this area. As the story goes, Maria used to make such excellent coffee that people would keep in dropping in her house for coffee. So she decided to open a cafe’.

The cappucino that I ordered was excellent even though not prepared by Maria herself.
